Amanda Farinelli, a Junior at JCU speaks of her experience in the Bishop Pilla Summer Institute 2013

TAmanda's Picturehe Bishop Pilla Summer Institute Program was a trip filled with incredible cultural adventures, as well as learning experiences. For over a month we were engulfed in the beauty of Italy and we were able to see numerous landmarks and historical buildings that make up the country.

Drs. Casciani and Ferri put an enormous amount of effort and planning into making our trip and it was an unforgettable experience.

While we were in Italy, we were always on the move, and I can honestly say that we saw everything. We visited numerous museums, churches, as well as different Italian cities to gain an understanding of the country’s importance.  We were spoiled with amazing food, interesting classes, and most importantly, memorable visits to some of the most exceptional monuments in the world.

While we were in Italy we were required to take two classes that focused on Italian language and literature. Taking these classes not only helped me appreciate the language and encouraged me to practice speaking on a day-to-day basis, but it also helped me in understanding our visits to museums. In Dr. Cascian’s Modernity class, we learned about Italian poets, sculptors, and painters. We focused on very well known Italian literary geniuses such as Michelangelo, Petrarca, Vittoria Colona, St. Francis of Assisi, and Bonaventure. Dr. Casciani taught this class with so much passion and she encouraged us to open our minds and hearts to the works of art so that we could fully understand the different emotions that were present in each of the artists’ personal journeys.

In class we would study the materials and then we  would go to see the works. It was remarkable being able to study the different pieta’s created by Michelangelo, and then seeing them with my own eyes. I fully respect and appreciate John Carroll University and the Bishop Pilla Summer Institute for allowing me to experience art in person.

My studies abroad were an  incredible journey. It opened my eyes to a new culture and it definitely helped me grow as a person.
